Biography
Kristin Wyly was born in Keller, Texas. Her passion for art and costumes developed at a young age. While in high school, she enjoyed experimenting with unconventional materials in order to make her art. The University of North Texas provided her with practical skills and traditional methods to further advance her art. She now lives in Denton, Texas where she utilizes the many reuse stores for materials and inspiration.
Artist Statement
I have always been fascinated with the way things work and move.  I view much of my work as exercises in understanding the meaning of the shape of things. Because of this, I not only make traditional art but also have a strong passion for crafts such as special effects, costuming and sewing. Through costumes I am able to tap in to unconscious desires and create a living, moving work of art. I can change how someone looks, feels and moves through the manipulation of materials to create a believable illusion of oneself.
When I study something for my art, I try to find what about it inspired me and capture it in my piece. In order to more effectively do this, I chose to use various mediums and materials as is suitable. I pride myself on my ability to create with what I have available. This is not only economically motivated, but environmentally inspired. I prefer to recycle materials from what would otherwise be trash or else purchase at a second hand shop rather than buy materials new. I find this adds an interesting challenge to my work and provides an extra layer of meaning to my pieces. For me, using recycled materials allows an ordinary thing to be reborn as art.
